# Cognitive-Visual Integration

Vision is not just eyes — it's a brain process. These exercises couple visual input with higher-order cognition: working memory, selective attention, pattern recognition, and dual-task coordination. Training the visual-cognitive interface produces the broadest transfer to real-world performance.

#### Orb Tracker

*Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) — follow several moving targets simultaneously.*

* **(2013)** *Faubert J — Scientific Reports* Professional athletes show extraordinary learning on 3D-MOT. Training engages the dorsal visual stream and working memory. See Domain 4 for full details.
* **(1988)** *Pylyshyn ZW & Storm RW — Spatial Vision* MOT engages a limited-capacity visual indexing system (\~4–5 objects). Training increases both capacity and the speed of index maintenance, reflecting genuine cognitive plasticity.

#### Memory Grid

*Visual pattern recall — remember and reproduce spatial patterns.*

* **(1997)** *Luck SJ & Vogel EK — Nature* Visual working memory capacity is approximately 4 items, with individual differences predicting cognitive performance. Capacity is trainable through adaptive visual memory exercises.

#### Gaze Simon

*Sequence learning — reproduce sequences through eye movements.*

* **(2005)** *Conway CM et al. — Current Directions in Psychological Science* Sequence learning engages the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and prefrontal cortex. Implicit sequence learning through eye movements transfers to improved procedural learning across domains.

#### Center Focus

*Flanker task — identify central targets while ignoring peripheral distractors.*

* **(1974)** *Eriksen BA & Eriksen CW — Perception & Psychophysics* The flanker compatibility effect reveals the limits of selective visual attention. Training on flanker tasks reduces interference effects, reflecting improved attentional control.

#### What Changed?

*Change detection — spot the difference between two visual scenes.*

* **(2002)** *Rensink RA — Annual Review of Psychology* Change blindness demonstrates fundamental limits of visual attention. Training reduces change detection thresholds and increases the speed of visual comparison, with transfer to real-world observation skills.

#### Hide & Seek

*Figure-ground segmentation — find hidden targets in camouflage.*

* **(2005)** *Dosher BA & Lu ZL — Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* Perceptual learning in figure-ground segmentation produces lasting improvements in visual cortex processing. Training effects are specific to trained features but show partial transfer to untrained stimuli.

#### Mirror Trace

*Mirror tracing — guide movement while viewing a mirrored reflection.*

* **(2004)** *Ranganathan R et al. — Neuroscience Letters* Mirror tracing engages interhemispheric transfer via the corpus callosum. Bilateral motor learning transfers from trained to untrained hand, demonstrating central (not peripheral) adaptation.

#### Fade Finder

*Contrast sensitivity training — detect faint stimuli against backgrounds.*

* **(1979)** *Kelly DH — Journal of the Optical Society of America* The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is a comprehensive window into visual system health. CSF-based training improves contrast detection across spatial frequencies.
* **(2013)** *Pelli DG & Bex P — Vision Research* Contrast sensitivity is a fundamental limit on object recognition and reading. Training contrast detection improves both acuity and real-world visual performance.

#### Brain + Eyes

*Dual-task training — perform a cognitive task while tracking visual targets.*

* **(1994)** *Pashler H — Psychological Bulletin* Dual-task interference reveals a central attentional bottleneck. Training reduces dual-task switch costs, reflecting improved executive control and automaticity of component skills.

#### Speed Read

*RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) reading training.*

* **(1998)** *Rayner K — Psychological Bulletin* Reading eye movements (saccades, fixations, regressions) are the bottleneck for reading speed. RSVP training reduces regression frequency and increases words-per-minute without comprehension loss.
